Teaching Whoever, Wherever & Whenever

This week is going to be different because there was a lot of days with only one or zero interesting things so I might as well just talk about those.

Café Savoy

We visited a Café (Café literally means coffee shop in Spanish but the way we use it in English is 100% accurate) and bought some pastries. One of them was not very cheap (1.50 for a cream cheese filled doughnut type thing is expensive here, amazing deal in the US though). They tasted really good.

Maria

This story takes place on two different days and is one of the reasons for the format change this week. It would've been weird to separate the two parts.

On Tuesday we were sitting around and scheduling  appointments and we really didn't have much to do. We just don't have a lot of investigators. We decided to pray to see if there was something the Lord wanted us to do that we hadn't thought of. After the prayer, Nuñez though it was a good idea to visit a house where we have had no success before. We scheduled an appointment at one point and the person didn't even live there. We stopped by the house and said hi. We found someone who was interested in hearing the gospel right here in El Carmen. We now have someone in the barrio where we live which is a first.

On Friday we had our next appointment with her and I think that was the strangest appointment yet. We got there and Maria (the new person) had her son (I think it was her son?), daughter in law, and a friend over, the son being very drunk. He kept on trying to talk to me in nonsensical English, as we tried to teach about the Sabbath Day. Everyone except the drunk was interested so we kept on going. A couple of minutes pass and two more drunks walk in wanting to talk. Now there's three sober interested people and 3 drunks. We quickly finished the lesson with them, greeted the drunks, and left. There was a stove fire going during the lesson  so there was smoke in the air and everything. By far the wackiest lesson yet.

La Mata is a great place for missionary work
We taught in La Mata on Thursday. It's easier than we thought to find people. We had two lessons there and a family member we didn't know joined the first lesson. Just like that we found a new person.

Towards the end of a really good second lesson, this family walked in out of nowhere. The mother was very interested in the lesson and she wanted lessons with us? Outside of La Mata, a struggle to find people. Inside La Mata, they walk in on lessons and ask for more.

Sunday: This day actually gets its own section
We got up and attended church. One of the inactive families that has expressed that they never want to come back to church came. We see them a lot and say hi and all and this is the first time they came since I've been here.
There was like 20 people from the other area in the congregation which was interesting.

We visited a member family in the afternoon where the grandfather isn't a member. We taught our lesson about the importance of sharing your testimony even if it's just a simple one.
We also shared this good scripture from Come Follow Me:
 Exodus 4:10-12
10 And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.
11 And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord?
12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

The brother was very interested in the lesson and it was clear he could feel the spirit. We was really interested in the lesson and we hope it leads to something.

Follow up on previous weeks
Yeah uhhh, we can't contact Alexander or Josè anymore. Don't know what happened with that. The family who attended last week didn't come but we're still positive about them.

Sacrament Attendance
Sacrament Attendance is soooo important here. It's actually a requirement for baptism that they attend at least 2 times. It's so important that the investigators know the members (now if the branch mission leader and branch president would attend church more often that would be great). We can't be here forever and Elder Nuñez leaves next week. The sacrament and knowing the members are key to helping these people. The problem we have with the members is that they don't know the people who come to church because they don't attend or don't pay attention to the new people in the room.

Pictures with Details

Still no letter from Chaz this week, but we talked with him after he sent a bunch of pictures. Here are some of the photos with explanations: Elder Bahr and Elder Jarman at a river near their house. Cooling off in the water. No swimming! Elder Jarman teaching members how to make French Toast Teeter break during the day. There was a whole rabbit cooking thing, not sure if this is rabbit or not. Making corn - said it tastes like popcorn. Skinning and eating rabbit. Chaz says it tasted amazing.

Teaching, Music, Lessons and a Baptism

Monday Spent the morning at the mission office. Bussed back and did my email and phone call. Played some basketball at the church. I'm not great at making 3pt shots but up close I'm decent. Tuesday - Got another baptism date We had district council and lunch with the district. There was a small restaurant? bar? behind a sweet shop. We had pollo chuco again. (Chicken covered  with sauces)  We taught this investigator, Esperanza who couldn't read but has been taught the lessons and wants to know if the church is true. She's currently having issues because her family and her family's pastor have been pressuring her not to go to church.  After the lesson we did her dishes using one of the outdoor "sinks". It was a large basin filled with water and had a ledge where you could wash your dishes. You get clean water from the basin, wash the dish, and you deposit the dirty water on the ledge because it had a drain.  Later that day we visited an inactive family wh...

Last Week (this is late, from the last week of October)

---Baptism--- We had the baptism of Nayeli on Sunday. She had been an investigator for a very long time (since last December) and many missionaries had given up on her. The entire ward attended which was great. We ran out of cake and there wasn't enough seating for everyone. It was great to see her take that step ---Another Baptism--- We attended the baptism of the bishop's daughter on Monday as well. The baptism doesn't count for us, but it's still great to see another baptism for the ward. We were able to help with the prep for it which was fun. We had to tape a mop to a broom to get the door open (hard to fill the font without the keys to it but we managed) ---Spiritual Thought--  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:6  I really like this scripture because of how well it describes the Holy Ghost. He helps us ...
